Patients with longstanding gastro-oesophageal reflux are at risk of developing Barrett's oesophagus.  This condition is considered to be a risk factor for the development of cancer of the lower oesophagus (gullet).  Patients with Barrett's Columnar Lined Oesophagus are recommended to have regular camera examinations of their oesophagus on average every 2-3 years.
